Dr. Komrad:

The international DOCTORS SAY NO organization is opposed to considering assisted suicide and euthanasia as medical procedures. I'm on the board and we sponsor a series of zoom lectures from physicians in several countries. Now, on May 24 [2024] we will be hearing from celebrated Dutch ethicist Theo Boer.

Dr. Boer had been very involved in the initial rollout of euthanasia in the Netherlands in the early 2000’s, on the review panel examining cases after death. However, he observed that the practice quickly lost its bearings and expanded far beyond the original limited intentions, and he came to oppose the burgeoning practices.

Now, not only does the Netherlands include the mentally ill as eligible and allow for advanced directives for dementia, but there is [also] a push towards de-medicalizing the eligibility and making euthanasia available simply for those who feel they have "completed life" or are just "tired of living.”

Originally a supporter of the early legislation, Dr. Boer has published and testified worldwide, warning of the lessons learned from the Dutch experience, so as to not repeat it.

In this zoom lecture he will describe how these practices have fundamentally changed Dutch culture and its relationship to living, dying, and disability – for the worse. The lecture will be recorded if you can't make it, and I will post that link when available. However, if you can attend, you'll have an opportunity to ask questions.
